Getting together was the best part of quilting for our grandmothers. Quilting bees not only allowed a quilt to be completed, but it gave the women a chance to socialize. It’s no different today with the quilting groups that are available in the area of the Missouri Ozarks. These groups offer instruction, workshops, pattern swaps and sharing, in addition to the opportunity to mix and mingle. For any quilters who live in this area, you will want to make it a top priority to check out all the details and avail yourself of all these groups have to offer.
Ozark Quilting Groups Provide Support and Inspiration

If you are an avid quilter and you are new to the region of the Ozarks, you are indeed fortunate. There are a number of Ozark quilting groups available in which you can get involved. One of the better known of the Ozark quilting groups is the Ozark Piecemakers Quilt Guild, Inc. This group was formed in 1980 as a non-profit organization to provide socialization, as well as inspiration to the quilters who live in that area. This group currently boasts a membership roster of around 300. They offer a wide variety of workshops and classes, and various branches of the group allow you to practice specialty quilting techniques with others who share your interests.

Ozark Quilting Group Meeting Times

General meetings for the Ozark Piecemakers Quilt Guild are generally held on the fourth Tuesday of each month, unless a holiday changes the schedule. They offer a morning and an evening meeting so that every interested person can fit one or the other into their schedule. Non-members are invited to attend two meetings before they are invited to join the guild as a full-fledged member. Membership is set at $25 a year, and that membership comes with a host of benefits and privileges. These include use of the guild’s extensive library and a monthly newsletter that includes a free pattern, as well as the obvious benefit of getting to meet people and make friends within this Ozark quilting group.

In addition, there is also a monthly workshop available, which may be scheduled on an afternoon shortly after the monthly meeting. These workshops are led by professional quilting teachers, and offer a great deal of information and advice for quilters of all skill levels. Evening quilting workshops are also available for those who cannot make the daytime classes. There is a fee for the workshop, and members are given a reduced rate over non-members. Interested quilters can register for the various workshops up to six months in advance. This can be done at the guild meetings or by contacting the workshop coordinator.

In addition to monthly meetings and workshops, members of this Ozark quilting group can participate in classes and meetings for sub-groups. The sub-groups may focus on a certain aspect of quilting, such as wearable art or appliqué. This provides the avid quilter with yet another opportunity to mingle with other quilters who share her specific interests. Additionally, it allows all members to benefit from the knowledge and experience of other quilters. Anyone who shares a passion of an artistic hobby knows how vital it is to seek out and make friends with similar interests. It is by far the best method for inspiration. And no one can help you navigate through a particularly complex quilting pattern better than an experienced quilter who just happens to be in the same Ozark quilting group.

Quilting designs are a little like snowflakes, in that there are hardly any two alike. This is a craft where you can take a design that has been created by someone else, and yet make it totally and distinctly your own. These designs and patterns range from the simples patchwork to the most intricate freehand designs. Some look for the design to be presented in the fabric itself, and more design patterns can be introduced in the actual quilting stitching. And if the design of the quilt is repeated on both sides – reversible – the work is even more intensive. Quilting designs are the delight of every quilter, and they enjoy discovering fresh new ones.

Quilting Designs – Just What You Want Them to Be

Have you ever wondered where all those beautiful quilting designs came from on a quilt? Many were designed by freehand. Others, however, come about as the result of using a pattern. Before the days of patterns, all quilting designs began in someone’s imagination as they visualized what they wanted the final project to look like. With many designs crisscrossing through several different squares it is easy to see that it takes real creativity to design a quilt.

The standard patchwork quilts are possibly the simplest designs to create as they basically consist of a patchwork of different color materials, cut into squares and sewn together in a hodgepodge fashion. Those patches that have quilting designs on them must be stitched together in order for the fabric’s patterns to match. Whether moving from left to right or from top to bottom, matching the pattern on each square with an adjacent square takes great care and patience.

The size of your quilt and the size of the squares which will make up the quilt are what determine how intricate the quilting design will be. While many quilters prefer to keep it simple with their designs, still others seek out a more intricate look. Using fabric with designs already on it can make a quilter’s work easier, but you will still have to cut each piece the same size to ensure that they fit together correctly to form the perfect size.

Reversible Quilts Call for Twice the Work

If you have decided to have your quilting designs reversible, plan on spending an inordinate amount of time creating it. Both sides will have to be finished, with regards to the knots. And depending on your concept of reversible, it may require the front and back to be made exactly alike before you stitch all three layers together.

A sewing machine that boasts a computerized guide will make quilting designs much easier to accomplish. With many of these machines you simply enter your design and turn the machine on. It will then automatically duplicate the pattern on whatever fabric you put in the machine. For edge to edge quilting in which repeated quilting designs are needed, this method can cut the time of work drastically.

Failing to have a computerized machine, you can find patterns with which to mark your cloth and then stitch either with your standard machine or by hand. Either way, realize that making enough squares for a good-sized quilt is going to take some time and work on your part.

For the more advanced quilter, using a kit would not even be considered. Unless, of course, a project came up that was needed in a great hurry. Then a quilting kit would work perfectly. Quilting kits come with everything needed to complete the project, including pre-cut pieces. Not only is a kit a great time saver, but it allows the beginning quilter to get the feel for piecing a quilt and finishing a project. It’s always a simple process to graduate from a kit to the more advanced projects. But many quilters are very thankful that quilting kits are available whatever the need.
Quilting Kits – Everything Included

Quilting kits provide the all-in-one answer to creating a beautiful quilt. These kits can make quilting easy and fun. Using a kit will save time in your quilting projects by allowing you to have all the quilt pieces cut for you. You will not have to cut the strips or pieces in order to complete the design. The kit gives you a detailed instruction sheet explaining how to create the design. Quilting kits provide all that you will need in order to create the top of the quilt and the bottom piece. The only items that will not be found in a quilting kit are the batting and the thread. Quilting kits are the perfect answer for beginners and even for experienced quilters who are looking for a way to save time.

What the Kit Includes

The quilting kits come with enough pieces to finish both the top and bottom of the quilt. All of the needed fabric pieces are already pre-cut. If you are a novice quilter, this will help you to learn the basics of the sewing involved and to get the feel of how to piece the design together without worrying about the cutting. The advanced quilter can use a kit to achieve a finished quilt in only a few hours. An advanced quilter can possibly make a stencil of the shapes and then re-use the design again and again. Either way, the convenient quilting kits will allow you to complete a homemade quilt in only a few hours.

The process of cutting pieces is one of the most difficult parts of quilting. You must get all the pieces as near the same size as possible or the design will not work. You will also have to repeat the tedious process of cutting repeatedly. Quilting kits then, help by cutting down the time necessary to complete the project. You simply open the package and begin sewing. The instructions are usually very simple to follow. The variety of designs is limitless and the level of difficulty will depend on which design you chose.

Other Uses

Quilting kits offer a wide variety of other options besides creating quilts. For instance, you can make quilted pillows, wall hangings, baby items, potholders, and other items. The same things are included in all the quilting kits you might choose. All the pieces are pre-cut and the simple instructions will be included to help you create that perfect project. The kits are not only easy to use, but they are great time savers. No matter if you are a novice quilter or an advanced quilter, you will want to give quilting kits a try.
