However, at the outset it all may appear a daunting task to learn how. Just as with any craft there are basic steps to take to get started. And there are plenty of helps available to ensure that you will get through the easy steps first. Beginning with a simple quilt that doesn’t require piecing is a great plan. Learning about the correct fabrics and colors to use, and even the care of your new quilt are important steps. Most quilters, once they get started become quite attached to their craft and enjoy it for many years.
Beginner Quilting – Where to Begin

If you love tradition and are looking for a new hobby, beginner quilting is quick and easy and very rewarding. No need to get fancy with the creative patterns. The best way is to start out small and go with the basics of beginner quilting. One easy way to begin is to start with two pieces of fabric. No cutting or piece sewing required. This is an easy way to introduce beginner quilting. Take two nice pieces of cloth fabric, lay the batting in between and sew them together. It’s simple to incorporate different techniques in this easy project. The more you experiment, the more advanced your skills will become. You will not remain a beginner quilting for long. In no time at all, you will easily be creating complex pieces.

The Easiest Pattern to Make

The very simplest pattern for beginner quilting is the quilt that requires two pieces of material. The following pattern takes you through the steps in creating your very first quilt. Follow these instructions and before you know it, you will be enjoying your own handmade quilt.
First, purchase two yards of fabric. You will need at least one yard of the same design in one whole piece. One piece is for the top and the other piece is for the bottom. You will also need a piece of batting that is the exact size as the fabric. Check to see that each piece is the same length and width. After selecting the fabric pieces, run them through the wash. This will allow for shrinkage so that both beginner quilting pieces will be even.

Now place the two pieces of fabric together with the right sides of the fabric facing each other. Place your batting on the bottom of the pile and start sewing on your beginner quilting project. You will need to sew a seam around all three complete sides, but only about ¾ of the last side. Any size of seam allowance will work, but just be sure it is the same around the whole beginner quilting piece. After you have finished the sewing, you will turn your pieces out and thru the hole. The batting will now be positioned within the two other pieces. Make sure that the stitches went through all of your fabric.

If corrections are needed, simply turn inside out again and stitch again, and turn it again. Once you have stitched the fabric correctly, close the hole on the fourth side. This can be completed by hand-stitching this hole closed. Once the stitching is all finished, you will want to iron the beginner quilting piece to be sure that the batting and fabric are flat and uniform. Trim off any extra fabric around to give a more finished look. Congratulations. You have just finished your first beginner quilting project.

How to Care for Your Quilt

Now that your beginner quilting project is complete, you will need to take proper care of it so it will last. It will be best to wash the quilt in warm water using a mild detergent. If the quilt material has colors that run, only wash it in cold water. While you can use a clothes dryer, it is best to set keep it on the low heat cycle or hang to dry. High heat may cause the batting to wad in the comforter and then it will be ruined. When the quilt is not in use, package it in a blanket bag so that moths and other environmental agents cannot ruin it.

Creating your first quilt is an exciting experience for you. With the right care, your beginner quilting project can last a lifetime!

Quilting – Memories of a lifetime

The art of quilting can affect you more than you realize. The art of sewing these beautiful and unique quilts by hand has been passed down from generation to generation. Think of mothers and daughters and friends working together, fitting the pieces of fabric together to create that special wedding coverlet. This is the essence of quilting. These family quilts have been passed down from one couple to the next to adorn the marriage bed for many decades. Imagine the warmth that this kind of tradition holds for the future. There are endless amazing stories that these old quilts could tell about quilting groups and the conversations that went on around it while it was being created.

Special Fabrics

Imagine with me if you will, a woman, a mother, carefully choosing and purchasing a certain fabric. The fabric, which has been sitting for quite a while now has no special purpose except for its beauty. This fabric is beautifully decorated with the most unique designs. She may not know what it is for but she does know that it is special. She stores it away for another time when the objective will be revealed. No one knows when or for what it will be used. Meanwhile it stays safely hidden until the perfect time.

One day while rummaging, she discovers the fabric once again. It has been hidden for a long time. Now she has a special quilting project in mind. Her daughter is expecting a baby. This lovely fabric will transform itself thru the art of quilting into a beautiful coverlet for a little angel. Carefully she works on her quilting project. Finally, it is completed. It is constructed with the beautiful fabric that was chosen by her long ago for this special project. By quilting the baby’s coverlet, she is presenting an heirloom that will pass from one generation to the next. Her heart is as warm as the baby beneath the quilt. She has a quilt of her very own draped on her rocking chair. One that her mother completed quilting for her many years ago!

Making Hearts Glow

If you have been considering the art of quilting or possibly learning to quilt, don’t put it off. Not only can you make wonderful items for yourself, but quilting gives you the opportunity to touch someone else’s life in a special way. Quilting has passed the test of time to become a popular pastime today. Many beds in many homes are adorned with the quilts of past and present. Many people will pay hundreds of dollars for a quilt just to place it on a bed that will never get used. This is amazing. Think of the people whom you love who will actually snuggle under this wonderful quilt that you have created. Quilting truly is an art medium that ties the generations together.

In fact, our grandmothers and great grandmothers thought of no other way of quilting other than sitting around the large quilting frame. However, today even the quilting purists are using sewing machines not only for convenience but also for saving time. But which sewing machines are best for quilting? And how does one go about choosing one? You will need to know what features to look for and which features are the most important when using a machine to create a quilt. Choosing the right machine will make a big difference in the success of your endeavors.
Good Sewing Machines for Quilting Simplifies the Work

Today’s quilters have many more options of available tools than just sharp needles and waxed thread. Sewing machine manufacturers are now recognizing the demand for good sewing machines for quilting. There are several on the market that help to make quilting easier and more enjoyable. Not every machine is going to pass the test, especially among the enthusiasts who demand the best. However there are a few that have proven they can get the job done.

When quilters shop for a good sewing machine for quilting, the feeding mechanism is a top priority. Will it provide even feeds to insure precise piercing in the cloth? Stitch selection is also a concern since many quilters use a variety of styles of stitching as decorations within the quilt. Many quilters also enjoy free hand quilting. They want to be able to drop the feed dog for free movement of the cloth. That will be yet another mark of good sewing machines for quilting. Experienced quilters suggest setting a card table near the machine to help hold the abundance of fabric.

The length of the bar also helps to qualify good sewing machines for quilting. The more room there is between the motor and the needle the easier it is to work on a large quilt. Another determining factor of good sewing machines for quilting is most definitely the size and power of the motor. The typical sewing machine simply is not made for extended use and the long periods of stitching that quilting demands can overheat the motor, and it will burn out quickly. Anyone who attempts to adapt a standard sewing machine for quilting would be well advised to stop periodically to let the motor cool down.

The Importance of Quality Needles

Quilting while using a quality machine will certainly makes the project go faster. But even with good sewing machines for quilting, it’s only as good as the needles you invest in. Typically, a number 11 is suitable for most fabrics. For thicker material or thicker batting, a number 14 may be the order of the day. It is recommended that quilters begin each project with a fresh new needle. During the project if you notice the needle having trouble penetrating the fabric, quickly replace it with a new needle.

Many of the latest good sewing machines for quilting offer the option of quick changing for thread spools. Some even provide space for more than one color or type of thread. If you are free-form quilting on a machine using multiple colors, this particular feature will make good sewing machines for quilting much more valuable and useful to you.

In the true essence of quilting, every quilt can be considered a keepsake quilt. If someone you know, or even if that quilter was you, put time and love into the quilt, it becomes a keepsake. However, if keepsake means more to you, such as a quilt that is made up of scraps of fabric, each of which holds a personal memory or special meaning, then your approach to keepsake quilting will be a little different. Either way, look into what all is involved with creating a keepsake quilt, and then undertake to create one that best expresses you and your intentions.
Keepsake Quilting – Memories of Days Gone By

Keepsake quilting is not something that is taken lightly in the quilting world. In fact, it is one of the most popular quilts among consumers looking to buy one. Many a mother or daughter created their keepsake quilt with the intention of passing it down to succeeding generations. In past years, keepsake quilting was done by using old pieces of clothing or cloth that had no other use. In those days, no one wasted anything. Every family had a rag bag. If it was made of fabric, it eventually found its way into a quilt. Keepsake quilting today does not have to be made of all-new fabric. There are creative ways for giving your projects take that genuine vintage look. All it takes is a little creativity on your part.

Choosing the Right Old Pieces

Not everyone has old fabric just lying around the house to use in keepsake quilting. In fact, you may not even want to cut up some items that hold sentimental value. So how will you achieve the vintage look you want? The first idea is to pay a visit to your local vintage clothing shop. Here you can find truly great fabric pieces. It won’t matter if the garments have holes or stains. You will be cutting your fabric pieces around them. This will provide you with clothing that has an aged look and feel to them. This is a great idea also because you can find a wide variety of colors and designs for your quilt. Most pieces will run about $1.00 and up. Don’t think of these as other people’s clothing. Instead, think of all the great stories each of these articles of clothing could tell about the ones who wore them. What a great concept for your keepsake quilting project. In this way, you will be preserving a piece of someone else’s history. And just think of the stories you can tell about your adventure in finding the fabric. In this way, you are creating a new bit of history for your keepsake quilting project.

If you have a supply of old clothing lying around your house that may not be worth wearing, consider cutting these in pieces for your keepsake quilting project. Your children’s cast off clothing would make an amazing quilt. You may want to use it as a gift for them to take with them when they leave home. That quilt will give them a little piece of home to snuggle up against. Also, taking a few of those special pieces for your own keepsake quilting project will work to keep your children close even if they are not with you physically. Think of the reminiscing that you will do with each piece of fabric. This makes for a great conversation when you are telling your friends about that particular piece of fabric!

From the Old to the New

The idea behind keepsake quilting is to create a quilt that will stand the test of time. A quilt that will be passed down to generations. It will leave a little piece of history behind and yet can be rewarding in and of itself. Any old fabric can become a new piece that you will transform. Not only are you preserving the past, but you are creating something that can be used to tell everyone, including your grandchildren and great-grandchildren, about your past and your family history. Future generations will be amazed at all the stories that come from you and your keepsake quilting.

Quilting in the past has been a rather staid craft with the creative expression being in the selection of fabric pieces and in the placement of those pieces in various patterns. In more recent years, quilting has become more of an art form, and no more than in the area of meandering quilting. This style of quilting allows the quilter to design in an almost freehand fashion, creating a wide variety of designs. If you are a quilter wanting to expand in expression of creativity, you may want to learn more about meandering quilting.
Meandering Quilting Allows Freehand Artistry

The majority of quilters much prefer regular designs on quilts which work to form a specific design that forms a pattern or picture. However, there are other free spirits who enjoy the free expression that comes with meandering quilting. Circles, curves and straight-line designs sewn into the fabric, without the aid of patterns or without even sketching the image first, are considered meandering quilting.

Essentially, stitching designs without the aid or benefit of any pattern is considered meandering quilting. Or it is know as stippling when it comes to smaller or more intricate work. While often executed by hand sewing, there are some quilters who use a machine for meandering quilting, and they present excellent results. Stitching designs into the quilt in a freehand fashion demonstrates the know-how as well as the imagination of the quilter.

Typically, designs made by meandering quilting will not cross over one another, whether it is in a floral design or circular design. It is possible that when including more than one color of thread to form the design, these different colors will not overlap. And when tracing only one color, it will not cross. Using fabrics cut into various shapes often makes the designs appear totally unique, with stitching holding them all together in a freehand design.

Meandering Quilting Controlled By Hands

Manual stitching for meandering quilting is regulated by the quilter to establish equally separated stitching, overall that does not touch. When using a machine, quilters may utilize a darning foot or other free-floating foot that does not hold the cloth down while it is being sewn. This allows the operator to control the movement and release of the fabric. The machine can also used with the feed dogs to permit the operator have complete control of the fabric’s movement.

Stitches ranging from a half-inch apart to as much as two inches apart, sewn by freehand are considered free-flow stitching, or meandering quilting. Stippling is smaller – closer to one quarter inch apart. With these methods, the quilter is able to accomplish amazing designs. However, realize that you are still sewing through all three layers of the quilt, the front, the back and the batting. With many meandering quilting techniques, the design can be replicated on the back or the back may contains a totally different design.

The type of fabric used is up to the discretion of the quilter, as is the padding. Cotton seems to be the most popular for use as the padding because it does not hold the warmth as much as artificial fibers. However, it is still capable of being crushed by hand or crimped when creating unique designs.

Nowhere is it more difficult to make a decision than when choosing quilting patterns. Quite simply, there is just so much to choose from. The beginner wonders how one can ever make that decision. But it doesn’t have to be difficult. Especially if you simply start with colors, designs and patterns that most appeal to you. Move from there to perhaps a theme that interests you. If you are making the quilt for someone else, ask them for their input. Find out what they are drawn to. With experience you will learn exactly what goes into making the best pattern choices.

Quilting Patterns – Heartfelt Designs

All of the quilting patterns that are available can give you a fun way to express your uniqueness. The colors in your quilt should be shades that you like and are drawn to. The creative experience should be fun for you and a joy to work on. Quilting patterns come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and styles. Begin with a pattern that you find that is most appealing to your tastes. It is important that you choose quilting patterns that you like enough to finish and not set aside for later. When choosing the right quilting patterns and fabric types and colors, you will enjoy the task before you. It will allow you to enjoy your quilting patterns even more because you have a part in every square that is created.

Choice of Color and Finish

The process of selecting quilting patterns is not difficult. You will want to choose from a design that strikes your fancy, or you may want to create a quilt with a certain theme in mind. If you are looking for a special quilting pattern as a wedding gift, you may decide to choose the wedding ring pattern. If you are creating a baby quilt, you will want nursery quilt patterns that will blend with the baby’s nursery décor. Whatever the theme or style may be, your quilting patterns will reflect your ideas for what you envision the quilt to be. The fabric that you select will also mesh with that idea. Try to pick out colors and designs that will fit with your vision.

Craft stores provide a wide selection of new ideas for quilting patterns. They will also help supply instructions for those patterns. Using a color wheel is a great way for you to coordinate the colors and shades of your quilt. It is almost a given that buyers will choose a quilt based on the colors used in the quilting pattern. Color is a huge part of our daily lives and color can express our emotions for us. In effect, you want your quilting pattern and its colors to express your feeling on your very special quilt. Gather your special ideas and spend a day of shopping for fabrics. Allow yourself plenty of time to think over all the choices. Upon your return home, you will know that your time was well spent and you will be inspired to get started right away.

From Start to Finish

Quilting patterns come in a myriad of different designs. When you decide to create that special quilt, your design will express your moods and emotions. When you choose quilting patterns in this manner, you will allow yourself the creativity needed to finish your project. Your choice of fabric colors should reflect your feelings. Color is everywhere in our lives and they affect the way we feel. The many shapes and designs in your quilt can express more than you realize. It demonstrates to others the creative side of who you really are. When you select your quilting patterns, allow that creativity within you to shine out!
